bell - SOS for Seniors
The Challenge
In Canada, senior citizens often suffer from loneliness and isolation. Nearly 39% of the elderly live alone or with their ageing partners. In fact, seven out of ten who live alone are women.
The elderly who live alone are at considerable risk. In the event of a fall inside the home,
they may not be able to reach the phone.
Their age and illness might leave them too weak to reach out for help.
Could there be a way to come to their aid in an emergency?
The Solution
If a person’s phone screen has not been unlocked or if the phone has not moved from its location in 12 hours, then that persons’s emergency contacts are notified via a text message.
How It Works
The SOS for Seniors System detects when the screen has been turned on. If there is no activity for 12 hours, It will send out notifications.
The system will also use the gyroscope and ‘Location Services’ to pinpoint the person’s location. Once again, if the location and orientation of the phone does not change in 12 hours, notifications will be sent out.
This system will give the elderly a fighting chance in the event of a mishap or medical emergency.
